Michigan Eats · checked by hand, fall 2026
Michigan pasties
4 pasty shops in Michigan's Upper Peninsula for the pasty, a folded, crimped pastry of beef, potato, onion and rutabaga, each checked in fall 2026 against a 2025–26 source.
Lunch for the mine
Cornish and Finnish miners carried pasties down the copper and iron mines of the Upper Peninsula: a half-moon of crust crimped along the edge around diced beef, potato, onion and rutabaga, hot enough to last the shift. Yoopers still argue over gravy or ketchup.
The list at a glance
Towns with the most: Iron Mountain (1), St. Ignace (1), Munising (1), Houghton (1).
Our method: a place made the list only if a 2025 or 2026 source backed it up (a dated local news story, an official tourism listing or the place's own site) and its street address matched our records. Where the source page carries no date, the place also had to hold an active food-service license on the state's list, or a 2025–26 Detroit inspection. Review sites played no part, and places run by region and town rather than by anybody's score. Hours change, so check before you go.
On your phone, Michigan Eats orders this list by how far each place is from you, and a tap opens Apple Maps' live card with hours, photos and directions.
Other guides: Coney islands, Detroit-style pizza, Pączki, Middle Eastern in Dearborn, James Beard honors, Detroit restaurant inspections. City pages: Detroit, Dearborn.
